On the heels of Tax Day Tea Party protests around the country, Illinois State Representative Tim Schmitz of Batavia has introduced legislation to create an "I Want To Pay More Fund" for Illinois, which would allow taxpayers to pay a higher rate of the personal income tax by checkinga box on the income tax form. This is similar to a " Tax Me More Fund," the first ones of which was created in Massachusetts, and Arkansas around 2000/2001.
CFA has long been supportive of such funds, because they serve as a great tool to highlight the hypocrisy of those who call for higher taxes. In states where a Tax Me More Fund has been instituted, hardly any money has been contributed, as is the case in Virginia. Tax hikers apparently aren't so ready to put their money where their mouth is - and taxpayers don't have an appetite for higher taxes, as these fund balances show.
